The Honors Program seeks to enrich the academic experience of motivated, curious, and civic-minded students through unique courses and co-curricular activities.

The Honors Program welcomes applications from prospective new students, transfer students, and current UM students. The priority deadline for admission for the Fall 2025 semester is February 1, 2025. To apply to the Honors Program, select the appropriate option below:

The Honors Experience

The Honors Program is proud to offer our students a variety of experiences and benefits that extend beyond the walls of the classroom. Throughout the year, we host community-building social events and cultural outings, along with professional development workshops designed to prepare students for success in their future careers. The Honors Curriculum

Honors students pursue a major of their choice while taking Honors courses each year. Freshman-level Honors courses include special sections of some general education classes, such as Foundations of Oral Communication, Global Literature, and Music Appreciation. Upper-level Honors courses cover a variety of interdisciplinary topics and include opportunities for service learning, field trips, and research. Examples of past special topics Honors courses include The Mathematics of Chess, The Haunted South, Model United Nations, Life in the Universe, Exploring Star Trek, Family Communication, and The Origins of Comics.

After the successful completion of 18 credit hours of Honors coursework, a student is awarded with the Honors Certificate. Students who successfully complete 26 credit hours of Honors coursework (including a capstone experience) earn the University Honors degree.
